The outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party's presidential primary brought about an internal crisis in the party, as top party members led by the Governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has demanded that the party's national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu resigns, in honour of his promise to do so if a Northern presidential aspirant emerges as the party's 2023 presidential flagbearer.
While featuring on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily on Wednesday morning, a member of the PDP's Presidential Campaign Council, Adetokunbo Pearse revealed that the PDP is solidly behind Iyorchia Ayu as the party's national chairman and explained that attempts to oust him are counter-productive and unconstitutional.
Adetokunbo Pearse revealed that Senator Iyorchia Ayu promised to resign only if the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) not party members, asks him to resign, if a Northerner emerges as the party's standard bearer. Adetokunbo Pearse elucidated that no matter how influential a party member may be, he or she cannot ensure the resignation of the party's national chairman, unless the party's National Executive Committee orders the party's national chairman to resign.
